Student Health Services

The University of Oklahoma Schusterman Center (OUSC) desires its students to have convenient and efficient access to the highest quality health care services. To this end, the following student health services policies and procedures are being considered and are currently in effect pending changes and/or final approval.

Student Health Insurance. All OUHSC students are required to secure health and accident insurance for themselves and are also encouraged to secure coverage appropriate to the needs of their dependents. Student policy options are available (information available in Enrollment & Student Financial Services—660-3474). Norman-based students are not required to have health insurance, but are encouraged to seek coverage.

Convenient Healthcare services are provided via the Student/Employee Health Clinic located on the second floor of the Schusterman Center Clinic.  This clinic is staffed by Lori Steele, PA-C and Paige Box, LPN.  Acute visit appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:30-11:30 am, immunizations are offered M-W and Fridays from 8:30-11:30 am and 1:30-4:00pm.  To schedule an appointment at the clinic, call Central Registration at 619-4850.  Student ID and Insurance card will be required at each visit.

Fees for immunizations not covered by the SHC fee will be collected at the time of service.  If there are additional expenses for a clinic visit, an insurance claim will be filed with your insurer.  Any amount not paid by your insurance policy will be your responsibility.

The Student Health fee covers the following services: acute care, chronic illness monitoring, professional office charges, routine health care, in-house physician ordered lab and/or x-ray, and routine vaccinations and TB tests. The cost of prescriptions may be covered by the student's health and accident policy. Services not covered by student health fee include:

1. Hospitalization
2. Emergency room
3. All dependents' services
4. Consultant fees / Physician referrals
5. Infertility and obstetrical services
6. Lab and/or X-ray studies done off-site
7. Contraceptive injections or implants
8. Titers and tests not ordered by an OUCM-Tulsa clinic
9. Hepatitis and varicella immunization
10. Titers (and other non-diagnostic tests) requested by student
11. Prescriptions

Management of Exposure to Blood / Bodily Fluids. There is a University protocol for management of these accidents. All personnel including students and residents are required to attend a presentation on the subject. Details of the protocol are available in the Student Health Clinic. Contact Lori Steele PA-C at 619-4565.  Any indicated follow up care will be initiated by the Student Health Clinic with referrals as necessary.

For accidents within the hospitals, students should immediately contact the Emergency Room for instructions. For accidents in other clinical fieldwork sites, students should immediately contact your instructor and proceed to the nearest emergency room.

For all other injuries/illnesses after clinic hours, students may receive treatment at the nearest emergency room, or students may choose to see a private physician, but should be advised that these services will not be covered by Student Health Services.

For other questions regarding healthcare coverage, contact your insurance carrier directly.
