Subject Matter
This program is designed to provide primary care physicians, psychiatrists, clinic nurses, nurse practitioners, LPCs, LMFTs and other healthcare professionals with updated information to facilitate the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of or referral for psychiatric disorders routinely encountered by primary care physicians. Topics/ lectures in this program include: ADHD, mood disorders in women, insomnia, substance abuse disorders, stress headaches and geriatrics: Alzheimer’s dementia.
 
Program Objective
Our goal is to provide current information concerning the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of or referral for psychiatric disorders routinely encountered by primary care physicians.
 
Educational Objectives
By the conclusion of this workshop, the attendees will have developed the following knowledge components and skills objectives:
  • ADHD
    • Describe the diagnostic features, prevalence, and impact of ADHD
    • Review comorbid conditions seen with ADHD
    • Identify and discuss therapeutic interventions for ADHD
  • Mood Disorder in Women – Unique Issues
    • Identify the symptoms of depression more commonly seen in women
    • Discuss treatment options for women with major depression during the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, post partum and perimenopause
    • Describe common medical co-morbidities which may mask major depression in women
  • Insomnia
    • Describe the diagnostic features, prevalence, and impact of insomnia
    • Conceptualize the precipitating and maintaining factors of insomnia
    • Identify effective behavioral, cognitive, and pharmacologic treatment strategies for insomnia
  • Substance Use Disorders
    • Describe a Pharmacologic treatment plan for discontinuing benzodiazepine therapy
    • List the pharmacologic treatment options for adjunctive therapy in alcohol dependence
    • Describe the indications for buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) for narcotic dependence
  • Stress Headaches
    • Discuss how the presence of stress may obscure the correct diagnosis in a patient with headaches
    • Identify the relationship between neck pain and migraines
    • Discuss the common triggers of migraines
  • Geriatric Psychiatry
    • Discuss the diagnostic process used to identify Alzheimer’s Dementia
    • Identify psychiatric illnesses that may mimic Alzheimer’s Dementia
    • List therapeutic interventions for the patient with Alzheimer’s Dementia
 

Method of Teaching:
The teaching methods will include: lectures, slides, videoclips, or powerpoint presentations, handouts and a question and answer session.

Target Audience:
Physicians: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Neurology, Endocrinology, OB/Gyn; Clinic Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, LPCs, LMFTs, and other healthcare professionals.

Description and use of evaluations:
The evaluations will be designed in a Likert-scale format which provides information regarding each of the presentations and for the edification and improvement of subsequent educational programs.
