Established in 1990, the Oklahoma Bioethics Center was named a Center of Excellence on the Tulsa Campus in March of 1996. G. Kevin Donovan, M.D., M.A., is the founder and director. Associate Director is Mark D. Fox, M.D., Ph.D. Other faculty members are Andrea Hyatt, M.A., and Richard Dayringer, Th.D. Administrative Coordinator: Debi Garden.
The goal of the Center is to provide education, consultation, and research to meet the needs of Oklahoma healthcare professionals and students who face the increasingly complex ethical issues in contemporary healthcare. The Bioethics Center is responsible for planning and presenting courses and conferences for students and resident physicians on a regularly scheduled basis on both the Oklahoma City and the Tulsa campuses, covering a wide range of topics concerning professional ethics. Faculty members provide instruction and consultation to other healthcare professionals throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states, including all the teaching hospitals in Tulsa.
The Center sponsors a monthly forum in which faculty, members of hospital ethics committees, and other community representatives discuss current issues in bioethics that impact the practice of medicine and the welfare of the community. Several such roundtable discussions have affected both hospital policies and state legislation.
An annual award is presented to the student or resident writing the best paper in bioethics, an award frequently won by someone who has taken the Elective in Bioethics, a one-month rotation of in-depth study offered to 3rd and 4th year students.
Located in Suite 2H11 in the Academic Center on the Schusterman Campus, the Bioethics Center provides a resource library containing over 500 books, videotapes and audiotapes, thousands of journal articles, as well as subscriptions to fifteen journals, on a broad range of bioethical issues, all of which are available to Schusterman faculty and students, and other professionals.
